Contraceptives: Long-term

Long-term contraceptives are contraceptives that you could use over a longer period of time (years) to prevent pregnancy. They are usually reversible (meaning you can stop taking them or remove them) and they are said to be quite affective because you don’t have to rely on remembering to take them. Here are a few long-term birth control methods.

Implant

The implant (also known as implanon) is about the size of a matchstick and it’s placed just below the skin of your upper arm where it releases hormones into your bloodstream. It can be used from 3 – 5 years before you can replace it.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

It’s a small and flexible device wrapped in copper that is placed inside your womb by the healthcare provider. It releases copper ions which make it hard for the sperm to move around the womb, and it can stay in place for 5 – 10 years.

Intrauterine System (IUS)

It is similar to the IUD, but the difference is that it has low levels of hormones, and it can only stay in place for 3 – 5 years. However, the IUS is not recommendable to everyone, so it’s best to consult a healthcare provider.

Other methods

Sterilisation

Sterilisation  is a more “permanent” birth control method. It is the process of completely taking away the body’s ability to reproduce through minimal invasion or surgery. It is suitable for people that are sure that they don’t want any more children and it is available for both males and females. While female sterilisation is meant to be permanent, it can actually be reversed. However, the process of reversal is difficult and doesn’t actually guarantee that you will be able to get pregnant. This is why it’s so important for you to be sure before going with this method.

Emergency contraceptive

The emergency contraceptive, also known as the morning after pill, offers you a second chance to prevent pregnancy if they’re taken for up to 72 hours of unprotected sex. They are normally taken if you forgot to take your pill or didn’t use a condom to prevent pregnancy. They’re only recommended as a Plan B option, and they shouldn’t be used as your normal contraceptive like the pill.

With all of these contraceptives easily available to you at your local clinic, it is important for you to figure out which method is suitable for you, based on your reproduction needs. If you’re not sure which one will work for you, speak to your healthcare practitioner who will be able to give you the best advice .

Signs that you’re about to have sex for the wrong reasons

Making the decision to engage in sexual intercourse is a big deal because it comes with a lot of consequences – be it emotional or physical risks (like an unplanned pregnancy or STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection). When you have sex, it should be because you’re ready and you want to. Here are signs that you’re having sex for the wrong reasons.

You’re doing it because everyone is doing it

Just because your friends are sexually active doesn’t mean that you should be pressured into having sex as well. You shouldn’t be doing things simply because they seem to be “the in thing”. Sex, at the end of the day, is about how you feel about it – not how everyone else feels about.

You want to get it over with

Sex should not be something you’re trying to get over and done with. There is absolutely no rush to have sex. And also remember that just because you’re flirting and making out with someone, it doesn’t mean that you have to now have sex with them.

It’s important for you and your partner to understand what consent is – and just because you’re not sure about something – doesn’t mean that you have to be convinced to change your mind.

You think it will make you wise and matured

First of all Choma, that is not true. Sex will not make you wise or matured. Maturity can be measured by the responsible decisions you make when it comes to taking care of yourself, not by having sex.

To keep your partner happy

If your partner truly cares for you, they will not pressurise or rush you into having sex with them. They will respect your decision to wait until you feel that you’re ready. Also, they will not manipulate you into thinking that you’re making them unhappy by not having sex with them.

To get back at your ex

Dealing with a broken heart should not encourage you into having sex with other people just to hurt your ex. That’s a big mistake that will delay your healing process and you might end up hurting yourself.

You have a bad feeling about it

When you have a bad feeling about having sex, then this is where I say you should follow your gut. Your uneasy gut feeling is just your body’s way of waving red flags and you should totally listen to it.

When you’re about to have sex and you feel very nervous, doubtful or unsure, then you should definitely hold off from doing it. Read this article for more signs why you shouldn’t be sleeping with someone.

Benefits of Youth Empowerment

Youth empowerment is the process of encouraging young people and giving them the information, guidance or resources they need in order to take charge of their lives and make healthier decisions.  When the youth are empowered, they are able to fulfil their dreams because they have access to the opportunities, skills, and resources they need to reach their full potential. Here are the benefits of your empowerment.

Financial freedom

Youth empowerment can contribute to creating employment for the youth so they can be able to be independent and take care of themselves. Not only does it allow the youth to have financial freedom, it also allows them to contribute towards the country’s economy.

Good education standards

Education is important, and it’s a human right. Empowering the youth will help them understand and value the importance of education and give them the opportunity to make better decisions for the future while giving them more options for their careers.

Eradicate poverty

Even though poverty is a global challenge that affects all of us, it’s important for youth empowerment to be prioritised in order to avoid poverty. This means that there needs to be more importance placed, not only on school education, but also on career development, skills training and employment for young people.  When people are employed, they are less financially vulnerable and this can help decrease poverty amongst the youth (and in general).

Reduce the crime rate

The state of poverty in South Africa is a contributing factor to the high crime rate. When the youth is unemployed and have no means to make money, they tend to resort to crime which is not a good thing. When the youth is empowered and can make ends meet, they won’t see the need to turn to crime so they can survive because they’ll have a purpose and inspiration to lead good lives.

Youth empowerment is about giving young people equal opportunities and the courage to follow their passions. Not only do the youth get the chance to pursue their dreams, but they also get to boost their sense of self – because when you are able to make your life easier and more fulfilling, you become happier and more confident.

What are we Igniting really?

Once upon a time there was an organization that carried a bag of candy, just like Santa Clause’s mission, to help people…distributing candy to parents that need or probably want it the most to enhance the growth of their own. In this case we will focus on the NEED part more.

The organization manufactures a significant amount of candy, distributing to candy customers like CANGO (Coordinating Assembly of NGOs) who then allocates these coated, crunchy sweets to their children in need such as Young Heroes and World Vision. This is a repetition of a multiple of parent/child relationships around the world in the aim to provide support, growth and re instill the idea of being whole where gaps of self worth, diseases and societal issues are concerned. It has taken a significant number of years and billions of dollars to establish the impact for Global Fund (Candy shop) to distribute accordingly to different parents in efforts to end HIV among adolescent girls and young women and adolescent boys, echoing the silent voices out of women where their health & rights are concerned.

So far, the ultimate candy shop “Global Fund” has managed to save 27 million lives in impact, put 17.5 million people on Antiretroviral Therapy, treated 5 million people with Tuberculosis and 197 million mosquito nets distributed in Malaria prevention and support.

Today, as a continuation of HIV prevention tools/workshops and efforts around the world. This blog will document, feature and support the AGYW & AB in need from the different children CANGO has given sweets to on the play ground to help those in need.

Feel free to comment, ask questions and add suggestions on what you would like to see, know and do to impact on the issues at hand.

Yours in Igniting the best out of Y.O.U
